Rock-Bottom Faith

One reason why we cherish happiness, security, and comfort so much is because we've been trapped into thinking that our life here on earth will last forever and therefore precious enough to be preserved and protected at all cost. Henri Nouwen calls it "an illusion of immortality".

When I try so hard to get happinness and security and comfort it is because I falsely imagine I am going to last forever on this earth. Although I kept telling other people and myself that I will not go on living forever; and that life here on earth is short my daily actions, thoughts and concerns don't come across that I really believe that.

When I have such a passionate concern to be secure and comfortable and to be thought well of by other people, then my actions do not match with my beliefs.

But I suspect that for many of us we live our lives here on earth as if there isn't another one to come. We spend our time and energy and resources trying to make it good and trying to make ourselves look good. And because we're stained by sin. troubled by loneliness, and plagued by a sense of hopelessness, we feel we need to make ourselves as safe and secure as we possibly can.

So we find the uncertainties of life terribly unbearable; and we find the compulsive need to manipulate, and to get things within our control again. And right on that point, we lose our trust of God.

Life will have its crises. You and I are yet to be hurt in a hundred places. We may lose our jobs, our spouses, our health. We simply need to stop believing that we think that what we desire so badly is available this side of heaven. They are not.

We were designed to live in a perfect world, uncorrupted by seeds of selfishness and greed and lust, and this is not that world.

To whom did Jesus promise paradise ? Only to the man about to die. When he turned to the rest of us with time left on earth He spoke of failure, He spoke of trouble and hardship. This is where trust comes in.

Though waves and storms go o'er my head
Though strength and health and friends be gone
Though joys be withered all and dead
  Though every comfort be withdrawn
On this my steadfast soul relies
   Father, Thy mercy never dies
